A typing practice page sounds simple until Korean input is involved. At first, it is tempting to think the product only needs prompts, an input box, speed measurement, and a few practice modes. But Korean typing is not just English typing with different characters. The relationship between what the user sees and what the keyboard receives is different. Jamo composition, IME behavior, double consonants, vowels, and completed syllables all affect the rhythm.
That is why the typing practice feature had to become more than a small utility. It needed to become a product layer inside the site: a place with modes, progression, visual guidance, local records, and a flow that does not interrupt the user's hands.
The first design question
The first question was whether /typing should be a lightweight widget or a real practice space. A widget is easier. It can show a sentence, collect input, and display a score. But it does not give users a reason to return. It also fails to support different learning stages: key-zone practice, word practice, short sentences, long-form copy practice, speed tests, and game-like repetition.
The product direction became clearer once the feature was treated as a practice space. Each mode had a job:
- Key-zone practice builds familiarity with the Korean two-set keyboard.
- Word practice helps users connect letters into short chunks.
- Short sentence practice trains rhythm and accuracy.
- Long-form practice supports sustained typing.
- Speed tests provide measurable sessions.
- Game mode gives lighter repetition and motivation.
This structure made /typing feel like a destination rather than a form.
Korean input changed the rules
A Korean typing tool cannot simply compare the visible string after every keystroke. The user may be composing a syllable that is not finished yet. A single visible syllable can require multiple key presses. Some mistakes happen at the jamo level before the completed character is even visible.
That means the product needed different assumptions from a typical English typing test. It needed to care about composition, focus, and key mapping. It also needed to avoid punishing users for normal IME behavior.
The key-zone mode was especially sensitive. It had to guide physical key positions, not only final characters. If the app says the next key is one thing while the user's keyboard reality says another, the guide becomes noise.
The virtual keyboard was not decoration
The on-screen keyboard became one of the most important parts of the experience. A keyboard visual can look harmless, but if the spacing is wrong, the Shift keys are unclear, or the Space key sits in the wrong place, the user loses trust. The screen should reinforce muscle memory, not fight it.
The keyboard layout was revised to feel more like an actual keyboard. Number rows, top rows, home rows, lower rows, and the space row needed clearer positioning. Modifier keys such as Tab, Caps Lock, Backspace, Enter, Shift, and Space were included so the layout had a physical sense of proportion.
The Space key was a small but telling example. If it appears stuck to the left side, the whole keyboard feels fake. Moving it to the lower center with the right width made the interface feel more grounded.
Flow mattered more than score screens
One of the biggest UX lessons was that typing practice must protect flow. If a prompt is completed and the page immediately jumps to a result screen, the user's hands stop. If the input loses focus, the rhythm breaks. If the text area becomes disabled even briefly, the experience feels fragile.
The better behavior is continuous practice. Complete one prompt, move to the next, keep focus, keep the user's hands in place. Scores are useful, but they should not interrupt every repetition. For this kind of product, uninterrupted rhythm is more important than dramatic feedback.
This is where human review mattered. Automated checks can confirm that a component renders and state changes happen. They cannot easily feel whether a practice session is annoying. The product needed someone to type into it and say: this transition breaks the rhythm.
Assets changed the product feel
The feature also needed visual density. Without illustrations, mode cards, and game assets, /typing felt like a development page. Adding mode artwork and game sprites made it feel more like a real product area. This was not only decoration. It helped users understand that the page had multiple modes and a broader experience.
The asset plan separated needs by mode: card illustrations for practice types, sprites for game mode, backgrounds, effects, and sound cues. Even when the implementation stayed lightweight, having an asset structure made the product easier to expand.
What the typing project taught
The typing tool showed that small products become serious when the details connect. Input behavior, visual layout, content structure, local records, mode navigation, and feedback timing all affect one another.
It also showed where AI-assisted development is strongest and weakest. Agents can build structure quickly. They can revise components, trace state, and run checks. But the quality of a typing product depends on embodied feedback: does this feel right when someone actually types?
The answer came from iteration. Plan the product layer, let agents build, use the tool, identify the friction, and tighten the implementation. That loop turned a simple typing page into something closer to a durable product.
